Racking Relocation UK — The Complete Service

Racking relocation is the specialist process of dismantling an existing pallet racking installation at one warehouse, transporting every component to a new site, and reinstalling it to the same — or better — standard. For businesses moving premises, consolidating stock, or reconfiguring storage, it is almost always more cost-effective than purchasing an entirely new system.

Rackstor UK Ltd manages the entire project from first survey to final handover. We do not subcontract dismantling, transport or reinstallation. Every operative, vehicle and piece of plant on your site is ours, giving you a single point of accountability and eliminating the coordination risk of using multiple contractors.

Why relocate racking rather than buy new? Modern adjustable pallet racking is engineered to last 20-25 years with proper installation and maintenance. If your current system is less than fifteen years old and in good structural condition, relocating it is typically a cost-effective alternative to buying new — while delivering an installation that performs identically in your new building. You also avoid lengthy lead times for new materials and reduce waste sent to landfill. For a fixed-price quote, call 0800 654 6955.

Our crews are SEMA-trained, SEIRS-registered, CSCS-accredited and experienced with every major UK racking brand. We carry comprehensive insurance, produce method statements and RAMS for every project, and issue a PUWER 1998 compliance certificate on completion.

How it works

The Racking Relocation Process Step By Step

A successful relocation depends on precision at every stage. Our five-step process has been refined over two decades and hundreds of nationwide moves:

  1. Pre-relocation survey. A SEMA-trained engineer visits your existing site to assess the racking condition, record bay sizes, beam levels, frame depths and manufacturer. We then survey the destination warehouse to confirm floor slab loading capacity, clear height, column positions and sprinkler head locations. From this we produce an optimised reinstall drawing and a fixed-price quotation.
  2. Dismantling and labelling. Every bay is destocked, beams are removed in the correct top-down sequence, and all components — upright frames, beams, bracing, baseplates, floor fixings and safety clips — are labelled by run and bay. This systematic approach eliminates the confusion that adds days to a reinstall.
  3. Transport in our own vehicles. Components are palletised, protected and loaded onto our own fleet. Your racking never leaves our control, and our goods-in-transit insurance covers the full replacement value of the load.
  4. Reinstallation to SEMA standards. At the new site we install new floor fixings, plumb and level every frame, engage all beam clips correctly, and fit current load notices. The layout follows the agreed reinstall drawing and complies with BS EN 15635 and SEMA guidance.
  5. PUWER certification on handover. Every relocation is signed off with a written PUWER 1998 compliance certificate. We can also arrange an independent SEMA-aligned post-installation inspection if required by your insurer or audit requirements.
Right solution, right time

When Does Racking Relocation Make Sense?

Racking relocation is the right choice in the majority of warehouse moves, but there are specific scenarios where the financial and operational case is strongest:

  • Moving warehouse. If you are relocating to a new distribution centre, factory or storage facility, taking your existing racking with you eliminates the capital outlay of a new system and allows your storage layout to remain familiar to your operatives.
  • Downsizing or upsizing. Businesses reducing their footprint can relocate a portion of their racking to a smaller site. Businesses expanding can bring existing stock to a larger facility and supplement it with additional bays — a hybrid approach that spreads capital spend.
  • Racking is less than 15 years old. Most adjustable pallet racking manufactured since 2010 is still within its design life. If the uprights are straight, beams are undamaged and safety clips are intact, relocation is almost always viable.
  • Racking is in good structural condition. A pre-relocation survey identifies any components that need replacement — typically a small fraction of the total. Even with some new parts, the overall project remains far cheaper than a full new installation.

Racking Relocation Cost UK

The most common question we are asked is simple: how much will it cost? The honest answer is that it depends — but in almost every case, it costs substantially less than buying new.

Significant savings vs buying new: relocating your existing racking is a cost-effective alternative to equivalent new racking. For a 100-bay installation the saving can be substantial, with the added benefit of avoiding lengthy lead times on new materials. Call 0800 654 6955 for a fixed-price quotation based on your exact specification.

Factors that affect the cost of racking relocation:

  • Distance between sites. Longer hauls increase transport time and fuel, though our own fleet keeps this controlled.
  • Racking type and complexity. Standard adjustable pallet racking is straightforward. Drive-in, push-back, narrow-aisle or cantilever systems require additional expertise and time.
  • Quantity of bays and beam levels. More bays means more labour and transport, but economies of scale apply — large projects often have a lower cost per bay.
  • Access constraints. Tight loading bays, mezzanines above the racking, or restricted working hours can add complexity.
  • Condition and replacement parts. If survey identifies damaged uprights, missing clips or corroded baseplates, we quote for replacement components upfront.

Every quotation we issue is fixed-price with same-day turnaround after the free survey. There are no hourly rates, no day-rate creep, and no hidden extras.

Mobile Shelving and Roller Racking Relocation

In addition to pallet racking relocation, Rackstor UK Ltd provides specialist mobile shelving relocation services across the UK.

Mobile shelving — also known as roller racking, compactus or rolling stack — is a high-density storage system mounted on mobile bases that run on floor tracks. Relocating these systems requires expertise in dismantling the carriages, protecting precision tracks and bearings during transport, and reinstalling with correct rail alignment and safety locking mechanisms.

Our teams have relocated mobile shelving for hospitals, law firms, local authorities, archives and commercial offices nationwide. If your project includes mobile shelving alongside pallet racking, we can coordinate both elements within a single programme, saving time and reducing disruption.

Common questions

Racking Relocation FAQs

Everything you need to know before moving your pallet racking.

How much does racking relocation cost?

Racking relocation is a cost-effective alternative to buying equivalent new racking. The final price depends on the number of bays, beam levels, travel distance, access constraints and whether any damaged components need replacing. We provide fixed-price quotations with same-day turnaround after a free site survey — no hidden extras.

What is the racking relocation process?

Our process follows five stages: (1) a free pre-relocation survey of both sites, (2) systematic dismantling and labelling of every component, (3) transport on our own fleet with comprehensive goods-in-transit cover, (4) reinstallation to SEMA standards with new floor fixings, plumbed frames and engaged beam clips, and (5) PUWER 1998 compliance certificate on handover.

How long does a racking relocation take?

A typical warehouse relocation of 50-100 bays takes 3-5 working days on site, depending on access, stock clearance and travel distance. Large projects or phased moves can be scheduled over several weeks. We provide a detailed programme with every fixed-price quotation.

Can all types of pallet racking be relocated?

Almost all adjustable pallet racking systems can be relocated provided they are in good structural condition. We relocate Dexion, Link 51, Redirack, Stow, Mecalux, Schaefer, Apex, HiLo and many more. Very old or heavily damaged racking may require partial replacement — our survey identifies this upfront.

Is relocated racking compliant with UK safety regulations?

Yes. Every Rackstor UK Ltd relocation is reinstalled to SEMA guidelines and BS EN 15635. We issue a PUWER 1998 completion certificate on handover, fit current load notices, and can arrange an independent SEMA-aligned post-installation inspection on request.
