A warehouse move is one of the most complex logistics projects a business can undertake. This practical guide helps you plan it correctly from the start.
Start Planning Early
The biggest mistake businesses make is underestimating the time required. A large racking installation can take several weeks to dismantle and reinstall correctly. Add lead times for any new racking required and the programme for a major warehouse move can easily stretch to 8-12 weeks.
Start planning 3-6 months before the intended move date.
Survey Both Buildings
Before committing to a new warehouse, survey it with your racking contractor present. Confirm floor loading capacity, check clear heights, column positions and sprinkler head locations.
Rackstor Trading provides free pre-move surveys of both existing and proposed new warehouses.
Plan the Racking Layout for the New Building
The new layout should be designed before any dismantling begins. This allows you to identify additional racking required, components that can be reused, and the sequence of the move — particularly if you need to maintain operations during the transition.
Use Own Plant and Labour
Rackstor Trading operates with its own plant and labour — we do not subcontract our moves. This means a single point of accountability for the entire project from survey through to operational handover. Call 0800 654 6955 to discuss your warehouse move.
